This time around I planned our Amazing Date. I had been planning this for months...and if you know me, I have to go all out and crafty! Here is a pic of what our clues looked like. Plus I had my mom help me sew a "Clue Bag".
Our date started on a Friday, May 20th, after work. The first task for Steve was to go to the predetermined location in our GPS. It ended up being an A&W restaurant in Price, UT. When he got there he had to do a Detour. Which means he had to decide between two tasks...Float or Bloat. For float, he had to order us two root beer floats, for bloat he had to order the Papa Burger combo which is like 2 or 3 hamburger patties. He really ended up doing both because he got the Papa Burger combo AND a root beer float!
Then our next destination and the Pit Stop for the night was a Bed and Breakfast in Moab! It was called the Sunflower Hill Luxury Inn. It was awesome, it had a pool and everything! Here is a pic of the main building.
The next morning Steve was given the next clue to travel to Canyonlands National Park.
While there he had another Detour...Truck it or Trek it! In Truck it he would have to drive to the Grand View scenic overlook and take two scary pictures for Grandma Adams. She doesn't like to see people getting close to cliff edges. In Trek it we would have to walk a 1/2 mile loop to take a picture of an arch on a cliff edge. Steve chose Trek It!
Then after that, he unfortunately got a U-Turn which meant he had to go back and complete the other task. So here are the two scary pictures for Grandma. Ok, the drop-off wasn't really that far down. Oh well!
The next clue was a Roadblock. A Roadblock is a task that only one team member can complete. This one was called "Who's seeing red?" Of course Steve had to be the one to do it because I already knew what it was. He had to go to the GREEN River Overlook and count how many visitors were wearing RED. If he got it right we would get to go to our Pit Stop for the day, if he got it wrong he had to do 5 push-ups then go to the Pit Stop. There may have been a little confusion on whether or not a doggie vest counts as a visitor wearing red, but he did get to next clue without having to do push-ups! I think this next pic is of the Green River Overlook...if it's not, it's another overlook.
Saw quite a few of these guys around too!
The Pit Stop was Zax Pizza for lunch. The rest of the day was free to do whatever we wanted. We decided to go to Arches National Park because I told Steve that it wasn't in the plans for the Amazing Date.
Here are a few pics from there.
There is a climber in this picture almost to the top. I think he is actually on his way back down we couldn't get close enough for a picture when he was standing atop the cliff.
Delicate Arch in the background. We did the short hike to the viewing point.
After going to Arches, we really wanted to go swimming at our Bed and Breakfast. Here is a picture of the pool:
Unfortunately the pregnant lady packing the bags only packed the top of her swimsuit and not the bottoms! Dang it! I was so looking forward to a swim too! The only bottoms I had with me were jean shorts and jean pants. Those don't work so well in water.
The next day started out with Route Info clue to follow a trail marked in my dad's Moab book.
We took the Sand Flats Road trail. The clue said when we got to the entrance station to open your next clue. Inside was a Roadblock. This Roadblock was called "Who's ready to have a brush with nature?" Only Steve could complete this task. He needed to correctly match 3 pictures of native Moab plants to their names. Here are the correct answers. If he could actually find a live sample of each, he was supposed to take a picture and if he found all three then he earned a bonus.
Here are the live samples he found:
This we believe is Cliff Rose...the big bush in the middle of the picture.
This of course is a Yucca. My Grandma Adams has these in her yard, so this was an easy one.
And we think this is Blackbrush. It looks like normal sage brush to me, but that is also what the picture looked like...so who knows?!
When we finished the route in the book, Steve had a Detour Clue. This one was called Mountain or Valley. For Mountain he was to go back to Moab via the La Sal Mountain Loop Road, for Valley he was to take the Castle Valley road back to Moab. He chose Valley, which is good since my dad's notes in the book say the Mountain road was blocked by snow (years earlier) at this same time of the year. Here are a few pictures from the ride.
There was a hole in this rock that I dared to Steve to climb through. He just emerged in this picture.
And I have such an adorable husband that he couldn't pass up the chance to see his preggo wife crawl through it too.
When he got back to Moab, he was supposed to find a place that had something "brewing".
When we reached the Moab Brewery, Steve had another Detour. This time it was called Have a Drink or Make a Stink! In Have a Drink he was supposed to order a pint of beer that the Brewery made themselves. In Make a Stink he would have to order the Hummus Platter and eat all of the garlic, onions, and sun dried tomatoes. He chose Have a Drink and had a very tasty beer (or so I hear).
When we were done with lunch, Steve opened his last clue.
This one was another Route Info clue...Here is a pic of what it said:
All in all we had a great time. It was a TON of fun to plan this for Stevey. I even made everything to be reusable...so the next time we do an Amazing Date we don't have to reinvent the wheel!
