Steve and I went on a fabulous mini vacation to my grandparent's cabin in the Uinta Mountains. Saturday started out with the boys (Steve and Grandpa) hauling in stuff from the truck to the cabin via snowmobile, while the girls (Sarah and Grandma) got the cabin ready and made dinner.
Sunday morning we packed up the snowmobiles and headed out to Whitney Reservoir. There is a ranger station near the reservoir for anyone to use. It has a big stove/fireplace made out of huge barrels. We cooked hot dogs over the fire and relaxed for a while. Steve and I raced our snowmobiles up and down the mountain near the station. It was lots of fun, especially when you went really fast and came flying up out of your seat. Here are videos of our expert snowmobile riding.
While at Whitney, Sarah convinced Steve and Grandpa to make snow angels with her. First we had to find a clear piece of snow where there weren't any tracks. Then we all plopped down and made our angels. Steve, being the very nimble person that he is, was able to get up and not ruin his angel. While Sarah and Grandpa had some major struggles. Here is a video of Grandpa and Sarah trying to get up...
After we left Whitney we went to Lily Lake. Sarah, Steve, and Grandpa went zooming over the frozen lake. Little did we know there would be slushy parts! AHHHHH!!! Luckily nobody died. Grandpa's old machine he was riding did get stuck for a few heart racing seconds on the slushy part though. Grandma was too scared to go out on the lake. And rightfully so, since she HAS gotten a machine stuck on a lake and had to leave it there!
That night we went home and ate a lovely roast with baked potatoes. Steve and Grandpa slept while Sarah and Grandma played Rumikub. We all went to bed early that night at around 9:30...we were pooped princesses.
The next day we decided to head towards Lyman Lake to a place called "The Commissary". It's a group of buildings used long ago for a purpose I cannot remember. :) But I like history and old stuff so it was cool to me. We rode past the commissary to the Wyoming border. I didn't realize it was so close. After that we went back to the cabin and Steve and I packed up to go home.
Here are the highlights of staying in my grandparent's cabin:
- No running water
- Getting the shock of your life 4 times a day sitting on a frozen outhouse seat
- Taking a bath with a washcloth
- Spitting toothpaste off the side of the porch
- Peeing off the side of the porch (Steve's Favorite)
- Playing games with Grandma
- Listening to Grandpa's colorful language, stories, and jokes
